What is Nitroderm TTS (Glyceryl Trinitrate) used for?

Nitroderm TTS (Glyceryl Trinitrate) is given to patients who have coronary artery disease, a condition which affects the supply of blood to the heart, to prevent angina attacks. However, it is only used to prevent the occurrence of an angina attack, and not to treat an attack that has already begun. This medical treatment is a type of vasodilator, which relaxes the blood vessels, thereby allowing the blood to flow more easily to the heart. It is also used to treat congestive heart failure.

How should I use Nitroderm TTS (Glyceryl Trinitrate)?

Nitroderm TTS (Glyceryl Trinitrate) comes as a transdermal patch, which is applied directly to the skin. It is normally applied once per day, for 12 to 14 hours after which it is removed. You should apply the patch to a spot on the upper arms or body, and choose a different spot to apply it each day. Do not apply it to broken or calloused skin. The reason these patches are only worn for 12 to 14 hours per day is that they might not work as well after they have been used for a long time. Continue using these patches unless told otherwise by your physician.

What are the side effects of Nitroderm TTS (Glyceryl Trinitrate)?

Some patients applying Nitroderm TTS (Glyceryl Trinitrate) patches to their skin may notice side effects, such as:

  • Itchiness
  • A warm or tingling sensation under the skin
  • Redness where the patch was applied
  • Anxiety
  • Feeling weak or dizzy

These side effects are not generally considered to be serious, however you should seek medical attention if they persist. More serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention include a worsening of angina symptoms, severe nausea or sweating, a rapid heartbeat or blurred vision.

Please Note

Patients who are undergoing and MRI test should inform the medical professionals performing the test that they are using this patch. If this patch is worn during an MRI, it may cause serious burns.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Nitroderm TTS (Glyceryl Trinitrate). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have any allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
