What is Carafate (Sucralfate) used for?

Carafate (Sucralfate) works in the lining of the stomach to treat and heal ulcers. It forms a protective coating over ulcers, thereby protecting them from enzymes, bile salts, acids and injury. This can help to speed up recovery of the ulcer.

How should I use Carafate (Sucralfate)?

Patients taking Carafate (Sucralfate) tablets should follow the instructions provided to them by their physician. You may be told to take it 4 times per day, before eating and at bedtime. Be sure to take it at least 1 hour before a meal, or 2 hours after. It is important to note that it can take up to 8 weeks for an ulcer to heal. Continue taking this medication as prescribed, unless told otherwise by your physician.

What are the side effects of Carafate (Sucralfate)?

Some possible side effects of Carafate (Sucralfate) include:

  • Nausea, vomiting or stomach pain
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Insomnia
  • Dizziness
  • Pain affecting the back
