What is Acivir Cream (Acyclovir) used for?

Acivir Cream (Acyclovir) is a type of antiviral cream that is used in the treatment of cold sores or blisters caused by herpes. It helps to hasten the healing of sores and reduce symptoms such as burning or itching. This drug helps to stop the growth of the virus, however it will not cure herpes nor will it prevent the transmission of the infection to somebody else. This medication may sometimes be used to treat genital herpes, however it is believed that there are other drugs available which are more effective for treating genital herpes.

How should I use Acivir Cream (Acyclovir)?

Acivir Cream (Acyclovir) should be used at the first sign of infection. Patients should first wash their hands, and then gently apply the cream to the affected area. If used to treat cold sores, this cream is usually applied 5 times per day, every 3 to4 hours, for 4 days, unless directed otherwise by your physician. This cream should be applied to the skin only, and never to the eyes, inside the nose, mouth or vagina. If any cream gets in these areas, you should wash it with water. Patients using this cream to treat genital herpes are advised to wear rubber gloves when applying it, so as to avoid spreading the infection.

What are the side effects of Acivir Cream (Acyclovir)?

Acivir Cream (Acyclovir) may cause some side effects to occur, such as:

  • Dry or cracked lips
