Atopex (Cyclosporin)
What is Atopex (Cyclosporin) used for? Atopex (Cyclosporin) is used to treat atopic dermatitis in dogs. This allergic skin disease is normally triggered by allergens such as dust mites or pollens, which can trigger an overactive immune response in dogs. Dogs who suffer from this disease will normally need constant management of their condition. This medication works by acting on certain immune cells which may have triggered the allergic reaction. It helps to relieve symptoms of atopic dermatitis such as swelling and itchiness. How should I use Atopex (Cyclosporin)? Atopex (Cyclosporin) should only be used on a dog if a vet has approved its use. You will normally be told to give this medication to your dog once per day, either one hour before feeding it, or 2 hours after it eats, until an improvement in the dog's condition is noticeable, normally after the first 4 weeks of treatment. You should stop giving this medication to your dog if no improvement is noticed after 8 weeks. The vet may wish to perform examinations on the dog from time to time, to determine whether or not an improvement has been noticed. After some sign of improvement has been noticed in the dog's condition, the vet may tell you to administer a maintenance dose to your dog, usually once every 3 to 4 days. However, you should follow the instructions of the vet with regard to dosage. What are the side effects of Atopex (Cyclosporin)? Some dogs who have been given Atopex (Cyclosporin) may exhibit side effects. Vomiting or diarrhea may occur in some dogs. These are generally considered mild. Other side effects, such as hyperactivity, fatigue, weight loss, gingival hyperplasia, muscle pain or reactions affecting the skin or coat, are considered rare. However, if you are concerned about the well being of your dog, you should take it to see a vet at once. Please Note This medication is only for use on animals, and should never be taken by or given to humans. Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by the prescribing vet while administering Atopex (Cyclosporin) to your dog. Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the dog and the condition it is being treated for. As this medication may be unsafe for certain dogs, it is essential you always inform the vet if your dog is used for breeding and is pregnant or lactating, as well as if it has any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if it is being given any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products. Immediately seek emergency veterinary care if your dog has any allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction in dogs include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing. |
