What is Carproheal (Carprofen) used for?

Carproheal (Carprofen) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which is used on dogs. It is considered effective in treating arthritis and deterioration of the joints in dogs which are old. Vets will often administer this medication to dogs to help relieve post-surgery pain.

How should I use Carproheal (Carprofen)?

If you believe that your dog is suffering from arthritis, take it to see a vet to determine whether or not Carproheal (Carprofen) is a suitable treatment for it. If a vet has approved the use of this medication on your dog, you should give it to your dog as directed. Administer the tablets to your dog orally. It is possible to mix the tablet in with the dog's food if the dog will not eat the tablets from your hand. If your dog is undergoing surgery, the vet will normally give it to the dog 2 hours before the commencement of surgery. You should note that the dosage is based on the weight of the dog, and the vet will tell you how much to give your dog.

What are the side effects of Carproheal (Carprofen)?

Side effects which may be noticeable in dogs who have been given Carproheal (Carprofen) include:

  • Changes in the dog's food consumption and drinking habits
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea or blood in the dog's stools
  • Aggressive or hyperactive behavior and possible seizures
  • Irritation or redness visible on the dog's skin

Before you administer this medication to your dog, you should be aware that in rare cases, the side effects of this drug may cause death. Therefore, you should take your dog to see a vet immediately if you notice signs of side effects or sickness.

Please Note

This medication is only suitable for use in dogs. Under no circumstances should it be used by or given to humans.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by the prescribing vet while administering Carproheal (Carprofen) to your dog. Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the dog and the condition it is being treated for.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain dogs, it is essential you always inform the vet if your dog is used for breeding and is pregnant or lactating, as well as if it has any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if it is being given any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency veterinary care if your dog has any allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction in dogs include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
