What is Colgout (Colchicine) used for?

Colgout (Colchicine) is used in the treatment or prevention of gout attacks. This drug helps to relieve the swelling of the joints caused by gout, such as in the knee, ankle or big toe. Gout occurs when the amount of uric acid in the blood is too high. Excessive uric acid levels in the blood can cause the uric acid to form crystals in the joints. This medication works by reducing the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints which cause pain to occur, which in turn helps to reduce swelling in the affected area.

Apart from being used for gout, this drug is also used to treat a disease known as familial Mediterranean fever, which causes pain to occur in the chest or joints. It is effective in treating these symptoms by reducing the production in the body of a certain protein that causes these symptoms to occur.

How should I use Colgout (Colchicine)?
