Opticare (Cyclosporin)
What is Opticare (Cyclosporin) used for? Opticare (Cyclosporin) contains 2mg of the active ingredient, cyclosporine per gram of ointment. This ointment is applied to the eyes of dogs to treat keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), a condition which causes irritation, dryness and burning of the eye. It is also indicated as a treatment for chronic superficial keratitis (CSK), a serious condition affecting the eyes of dogs, which causes pigmentation and problems with blood vessels in the animal's cornea. How should I use Opticare (Cyclosporin)? Opticare (Cyclosporin) ointment should be applied topically to the dog's affected eye or eyes, exactly as prescribed by the vet. Owners may be told to use a non-irritating solution prior to applying the ointment, so as to remove debris from the eye. A quarter inch strip of ointment should then be applied to either the cornea or conjunctival sac, every 12 hours. If you are unsure of how to properly apply this ointment, you should ask the vet. What are the side effects of Opticare (Cyclosporin)? Opticare (Cyclosporin) is generally considered to be safe in most dogs. However, some dogs may show signs of an adverse reaction, such as eye irritation, mild hair loss or inflammation. Abrupt discontinuation of treatment may cause a relapse of symptoms. Take your dog to a vet if you believe that it is suffering from any side effects. Please Note This ointment is only for use on animals, and therefore should never be used by humans. Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by the prescribing vet while using Opticare (Cyclosporin) on your dog. Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the dog and the condition it is being treated for. As this medication may be unsafe for certain dogs, it is essential you always inform the vet if your dog is used for breeding and is pregnant or lactating, as well as if it has any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if it is being given any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products. Immediately seek emergency veterinary care if your dog has any allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction in dogs include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing. |
