What is Isotroin (Isotretinoin) used for?

Isotroin (Isotretinoin) is used as a treatment for severe acne, also known as cystic acne or nodular acne. It is given to patients when other treatments, such as antibiotics have proven unsuccessful. This drug belongs to a class of medications called retinoids, which work by reducing the production of sebum (facial oil), thereby helping the skin to renew itself more quickly. Severe acne is often caused by high levels of facial oil.

How should I use Isotroin (Isotretinoin)?

Patients who have been prescribed Isotroin (Isotretinoin) capsules are normally directed to take it twice per day, with food. However, your physician may prescribe a low dose for you at first, which may be gradually increased. You should note that it can take several weeks, or longer before the full benefits of treatment with this drug are noticed. However, this does not mean that treatment is not working.

What are the side effects of Isotroin (Isotretinoin)?

If you have been prescribed Isotroin (Isotretinoin), you may notice some of the following side effects:

• Lips that are cracked and sore
• Dry mouth, nose, eyes or skin
• Discoloration of the skin
• Peeling of the skin, especially noticeable on the soles of feet and palms
• Unusual growth of hair or else hair loss

This drug may also cause other side effects. You should consult your physician immediately if you notice changes in vision, a ringing noise in the ears, seizures or any other serious side effects.

This drug can cause serious birth defects if taken by pregnant women, and therefore should never be taken if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Discuss the risks of this drug and the precautions necessary, such as contraception, with your physician, before you take this medication.

Breast feeding while taking this medication is not recommended.
