What is Lixen (Cephalexin) used for?

Lixen (Cephalexin) is an oral antibiotic prescribed to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections in animals. These may include infections of the ear (otitis media), bones, genitals, lungs, respiratory tract, skin, urinary tract, or soft tissue. It operates by disrupting cell wall formation to destroy sensitive cells while preventing their reproduction to stop the spread of infection allowing the immune system to destroy it. The veterinarian may prescribe it to be used along with other medicines or to treat other unlisted conditions.

How should I use Lixen (Cephalexin)?

Lixen (Cephalexin) should be used according to the veterinarian's instructions to ensure the safest and most effective results. It is typically administered one or two times each day at a dosage of one 600mg tablet, but the best treatment will be determined according to the animal's weight, symptoms, health condition, and response to similar treatments. Never self-medicate or alter any of these instructions as this may cause unexpected or serious health problems.

Administer the doses to the animal whole along with a large amount of water. They can be given with or without food, but a meal is recommended prior to use to prevent nausea or vomiting. Do not change the form of the tablets prior to use to avoid destroying their contents or altering their effects. This includes splitting, chewing, crushing, or dissolving them in water. You are also recommended to administer the doses at the same time each day to keep a consistent level of medicine in the system at all times for the most efficient use.

You may be suggested to bring the animal in for regular consultations with the veterinarian to make sure it is getting the correct results. After observing its progress and response to the medication, you may be instructed to adjust its dosage or application frequency until the best effects occur. If you have any questions about how to use the medicine, ask the veterinarian or pharmacist prior to administration.

What are the side effects of Lixen (Cephalexin)?

Please Note

Lixen (Cephalexin) should not be used in animals that are allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics, penicillin antibiotics, or have had a bad reaction to similar treatments in the past. Also inform the veterinarian if the medicine has decreased kidney function as this may require reduced doses or other changes to the regiment to prevent potential health problems from occurring.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your veterinarian or pharmacist while using Lixen (Cephalexin). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the animal and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain animals, it is essential you always inform your veterinarian if it is pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if it has any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if it is taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if it has an allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
