What is Maxalt Melt (Rizatriptan Benzoate) used for?

Maxalt Melt (Rizatriptan Benzoate) is used to treat migraines. This medication is effective in treating the vomiting, nausea, headaches and sensitivity to light and sound occurring as a result of a migraine attack. It works by helping to narrow the blood vessels around the brain. Please note that this medication is only effective in treating a headache that has already begun, and will not prevent future headaches from occurring.

How should I use Maxalt Melt (Rizatriptan Benzoate)?

Maxalt Melt (Rizatriptan Benzoate) comes in the form of soluble wafers, which are placed onto the tongue, and dissolved by saliva. This medication should be taken at the first sign of a headache or migraine attack. If the medication provides only partial relief, or if your migraine comes back, you may take one more dose two hours after the first dose.

Do not exceed 30mg in 24 hours. This medication should only be used to treat migraine headaches, and patients should only use this medication if their condition has been confirmed by a physician as being caused by migraine.

What are the side effects of Maxalt Melt (Rizatriptan Benzoate)?

Some side effects which have been reported by patients taking Maxalt Melt (Rizatriptan Benzoate) include:

• Dry mouth or nausea
• Feelings of heaviness or pressure in the body
• Tingling sensation on the skin
• Flushing
• Drowsiness

Although rare, there are other more serious side effects associated with this drug. Consult your physician immediately if you notice pain in the jaw or throat, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, blurred vision, fainting or changes in hearing.
