What is Rectogesic (Glyceryl Trinitrate) used for?

Rectogesic (Glyceryl Trinitrate) is a type of ointment used to help treat and relieve symptoms of anal fissure. It is also used to treat pain after hemorrhoid surgery. This ointment works by increasing the blood flow to the anus and helping to relax the sphincter muscle.

How should I use Rectogesic (Glyceryl Trinitrate)?

Rectogesic (Glyceryl Trinitrate) ointment should be inserted directly into the anus using the finger. You may wrap your finger in plastic wrap. Do not use an applicator. Insert a 3/8inch to 5/8inch strip of ointment into the anal canal using the finger. You must insert the ointment at least 3/8 of an inch into the anus. The ointment is normally applied 3 times per day. In order to avoid tolerance, you must ensure that each day you have a 12 hour period in which you do not use this product.

What are the side effects of Rectogesic (Glyceryl Trinitrate)?

Patients using Rectogesic (Glyceryl Trinitrate) ointment may notice some side effects, such as headaches. Less common side effects include dizziness (more likely to happen in older people) and reduced control over bowel movements.
