What is Selgin (Selegiline) used for?

Selgin (Selegiline) is used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, especially movement disorders. It may help to reduce tremors, stiff muscles and loss of normal movement. This drug is sometimes used by patients together with other drugs such as levodopa. It belongs to a class of drugs known as monoamine oxidase type B inhibitors, which work by helping to increase dopamine levels in the brain, which is required to control movement. The tablet form of this drug is not used to treat depression, however there is a transdermal patch containing the same active ingredient that is used to treat depression.

How should I use Selgin (Selegiline)?

Selgin (Selegiline) tablets should be taken orally. Patients may be directed to take this medication twice daily. In order to avoid difficulty sleeping, patients are often directed to take this medication at breakfast and lunchtime. The standard maximum dosage is 5mg twice per day. Patients should always consult their physician before taking this drug, and never exceed the dosage prescribed to them. If your physician has directed you to take this drug together with another drug to treat Parkinson's disease, such as levodopa, you may be instructed to decrease your dosage of levodopa after you have been taking selegiline for 2 to 3 days. Patients should be aware that it may take a few weeks for the full effects and benefits of this drug to be noticed. You should never discontinue taking this drug unless you have been directed to do so by your physician.

What are the side effects of Selgin (Selegiline)?

Some side effects which may occur as a result of taking Selgin (Selegiline) include:

• Spinning sensation
• Headache
• Insomnia
• Upset stomach
• Stomach ache

You should consult your physician immediately if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if you notice weight gain, swollen limbs, decreased sexual ability, tremors, muscle twitches, fainting or hallucinations. In rare cases this drug has been known to cause a potentially fatal attack of high blood pressure, also known as a hypersensitive crisis. You should seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of extreme high blood pressure, such as a fast pounding heartbeat, chest pain, blurred vision or persistent vomiting. Patients are advised to discuss the risks of all potential side effects with their physician before taking this medication.

Under no circumstances should this drug be taken together with another MAO inhibitor.
