What is Vagifem (Oestradiol) used for? Vagifem (Oestradiol) vaginal tablets are used to treat atrophic vaginitis caused by decreased levels of estrogen in post-menopausal women. This usually occurs as a result of declining levels of the hormone estrogen in post menopausal women. The active ingredient in this medication, estradiol, is a natural form of estrogen. It works by replacing the diminished levels of estrogen in the body, thereby helping to relieve vaginal symptoms of the menopause. This is called topical hormone replacement therapy (HRT). How should I use Vagifem (Oestradiol)? Vagifem (Oestradiol) tablets are inserted directly into the vagina, using the single use applicator provided. The applicator should be gently inserted into the vagina, usually 3 to 4 inches deep. Press down on the plunger to release pessary into the vagina. After use, you may withdraw the applicator and dispose of it. The dosage varies for each patient, and your physician will tell you the correct dose required. Some patients may be told to insert one pessary into the vagina per day for 2 weeks. The maintenance dose is one pessary inserted twice per week.
